So a couple weeks ago I saw that a production company was looking for an, upbeat, instrumental track, similar to The Reverend Horton Heat. “Hmm,” I thought, “what song of ours on the new album sounds the most like Reverend Horton Heat? Easy, ‘The Road To Hell Is Paved With Good Intentions.’”

Smart me had already had instrumental mixes of each of our songs made during the mixing process. The problem is that the instrumental mix is just the song without the vocals, which is pretty boring actually. So I quickly whipped out my guitar, fired up the recording machine and spend a couple hours learning, playing and recording the melody on my strat.

I submitted the song to the production company and, well, I haven’t heard anything back. HOWEVER, what may be too bad for that production company, turns out to be good news for us because now we have a sweet guitar instrumental version of the song and I can share it with you.

You can listen, and if you want, download it here:

http://snd.sc/yYZLW2

Hope you enjoy it. If you do, let us know what you think in the comments below.

The world premiere of the Foo Fighter’s first single, “Rope”, off their new album occurred yesterday at 7AM EST. It’s a bold choice for a first single; odd time signatures, breathy vocals in the verses, big catchy chorus, plus the sickest guitar solo on a Foo Fighters album yet. Bravo, Mr. Grohl and Company, bravo. Here’s the link:

http://rope.foofighters.com/

In my efforts to Beat Dave Grohl, I hereby release the first “single” off of our new album too. Okay, it was already released on an EP, but it will be on the new album and you can hear it below.

It also is a bold choice for a first single I would like to point out. I know, most people wouldn’t choose a slow tempo, slightly depressing song inspired by the sad state of Michigan’s economy as the first single to their mostly uptempo country punk album, but Brother Howe is not most people. Nor are we most people’s favorite band for that matter (editors note: there might be a connection there).

And so dear readers, without further ado, I present to you the first single off our forthcoming album:

Hard To Find

ps – I dedicate this song to Jeff Daniels, who’s love of our home state inspired my brother to write an award nominated screenplay, which then inspired me to write this song. I also would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Mr. Daniels for trying to pitch him on said screenplay on February 5th of this year.

I had contacted Brian a week or so before the new Weezer album, Hurley, came out thinking it would be good tie-in for the show. He liked it, but didn’t have a Weezer themed show in the works. I guess next time I’ll know to send in stuff further ahead of time!

So I wrote and recorded a song in two days, well a demo version anyway. See, there was this contest that I had no chance of winning. A pastor in Texas wrote a book called The Naked Gospel. As part of the book launch he had a contest for people to write songs based on the themes of the book. It’s been going on for a year and is based on votes. However, I entered on the last day and received a grand total of one vote. Yes, my own. Funny thing was that I did not have the least amount of votes. Apparently many people didn’t even vote for themselves.

So anyway, they are going to release a digital album from the top ten vote getting songs…plus one author selected song. My long shot and only hope of getting on the album. But regardless of whether or not the song gets selected, it was the impetus I needed to get my butt in gear and do something fun. This is a much more “Christian” song than I’m used to writing, so bear with me in that regard. I would have liked to get real drums on there, but because of time constraints, I ended up using programmed drums instead.

You can check out the contest at http://www.thenakedgospelproject.com/, or at least see what the top ten songs sound like. Here’s mine:

I went with some friends to see a Weezer concert a couple years ago when they were touring with the Foo Fighters. It was a great show (how could it not be?). Anyway, there was a point in the concert when they brought a random teenager out of the crowd to play a song with them. They handed him an acoustic guitar and showed him what chords to strum and got him playing as the rest of the band went into Undone (The Sweater Song). Even though we were in the second tier of seats I could see that all he was playing was G, C and D. ”Hey” I thought, “I bet we could do a country punk version of that!”

And so, today I sit at my control station ready to unleash upon the world our version of Undone (The Sweater Song) by Weezer. Here it is ladies and gentlemen, please download, listen, enjoy and let us know what you think by posting comments here on our blog.
